Year 4 Football / 18.03.19

On a wet afternoon the Perran-ar-worthal Panthers Year 4 Football team crossed the
roundabout to take on the Devoran Dolphins in a much anticipated local derby match
double header.
The team were one man down for the trip as Jonty was at the music festival (scoring a
fantastic 3rd place in his recorder performance), but it was not long before the Panthers
were creating beautiful melodies of their own on the pitch.
In the first minute of the match, Barney dribbled round a couple of players, made a
powerful run down the wing and struck a wonderful goal into the bottom left hand corner
of the net. The Panthers were ahead and the large crowd of travelling supporters (some of
whom had made the long trip down from Bristol to witness the drama) roared in harmony.
However, Devoran fought back superbly and equalised through a powerful shot into the
roof of the net. The score was 1-1 and both teams battled hard on a muddy pitch.
Thomas looked dangerous upfront with his pace and Dan made some excellent runs
upfield and almost scored a winner. Morgan played extremely well and, once again
demonstrated that his long throw poses serious questions for any defence to answer.
With 2 minutes to go, Devoran had a corner and a player struck a superb shot on the
volley towards the bottom left hand corner of the goal. It seemed certain to be the
winning goal, but they hadn’t counted on Eddie, leaping to his right to produce one of the
best saves ever seen in Panthers history. What a moment!
The last 2 minutes were full of more drama with Thomas’ brave collision with the post
forcing him off the field and Harry making some match saving tackles at the back. The
combination of Harry and Noah in defence was outstanding as both players looked
confident on the ball and tackled hard.
The final whistle blew and both sides had gained a well earned draw. As the Panthers
team bus chauffeur commented, “Neither side deserved to lose as both teams played so
In the 2nd match, the Panthers really sounded the right notes. They played some
wonderful football.
The game was goalless for the first few minutes until Taro dribbled through with the ball
and struck a fine shot into the back of the net for his debut goal for the Panthers. The
crowd responded with suitably enthusiastic celebrations.
Perran-ar-worthal continued to press forward and Miles struck the bar with an outstanding
strike from distance and Dan also hit the post.
There was still time for one last drama as Barney, pirouetting on the edge of the area
struck a low curling shot into the inside of the Devoran far post. If VAR had been available
then it would surely have come into use as the ball ricocheted across the line and
(possibly) into the far corner of the net.
Either way, the Panthers had achieved a wonderful victory and were a credit to the school
once again in their fair play and sportsmanship.
Thank you, once again to the travelling supporters who made the trip to Devoran to
witness another joyous occasion!
