Sports Premium

Sports Premium funding.

Key aspects of the Sports Premium Funding:
  • Funding Allocation:
Calculated based on the number of pupils in Years 1-6 (or equivalent age range in special schools).

  • Purpose:
To make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sports offered, encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.

  • Spending Requirements:
    • Must be spent within the academic year it's allocated.

    • Cannot be used for capital expenditure (except for small purchases under a de minimis value).

    • Cannot be used to cover PPA time for specialist teachers or coaches; this should be covered by core staffing budgets.

    • Cannot be used to fund the core PE curriculum or purchase services for future academic years.

  • Accountability:
Schools must report on how they've spent the funding, demonstrating its impact on pupil outcomes and participation in PE and sports.

  • Sustainability:
Improvements made with the funding should be sustainable and benefit future pupils.

  • Reporting:
Schools must submit a digital form to report on the spending by the end of July each year.

  • Potential uses:
Building capacity within the school, developing or enhancing PE and sports provision, increasing staff knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sports, offering a broader range of sports and activities, and increasing participation in competitive sports.

Examples of how schools might use the funding:
  • Employing specialist sports coaches or teachers.
  • Investing in new equipment or facilities.
  • Providing professional development for staff on teaching PE and sports.
  • Developing or expanding after-school sports clubs.
  • Increasing participation in competitive sports through fixtures and tournaments.
  • Providing swimming lessons.
  • Developing playground markings and games to encourage physical activity during break times.
